Your First Visit to Osteopathic Centre Hong Kong

Starting osteopathic care can feel unfamiliar, particularly if you’re unsure what to expect or whether treatment is right for you. This page explains how your first visit works, what we assess, and how care is approached at Osteopathic Centre Hong Kong.

Our aim is to help you feel informed, comfortable, and supported from the outset.

Each patient is an individual with a life story. We use that story, and seek ways to improve their function and quality of life in the best way for them. We’ll provide skilled, dedicated practitioners that offer a high standard of care you can tru

Who this page is for

This page is for people who are new to osteopathy, returning to care after a break, or considering whether treatment is appropriate for their symptoms. Many of our patients come to us after trying other approaches, or when pain, stiffness, or reduced movement has begun to affect daily life.

You do not need a referral to book an appointment, unless you are claiming under insurance and your policy stipulates that.

What happens before you arrive

Once your appointment is booked, you’ll receive a short intake form to complete before your visit. This allows your osteopath to understand your medical history, current concerns, and any relevant background ahead of time.

If you have scans, reports, or letters from other healthcare professionals, you’re welcome to bring them with you.

What happens in your first session

Your first appointment is focused on understanding your situation fully and developing an appropriate approach to care.

It typically includes:

  • A detailed discussion about your symptoms, health history, and any contributing factors
  • A physical assessment to understand how your body is moving and adapting
  • Hands‑on treatment where appropriate

Your osteopath will explain what they are finding and how this relates to your symptoms. Treatment is always tailored to you and adjusted throughout the session as needed.

At our Central clinic, initial consultations are one hour. Follow-up treatment appointments are available as either 30-minute or one-hour sessions, with most patients choosing one-hour follow-ups.

At our Quarry Bay consultation room, both initial consultations and follow-up appointments are 50 minutes.

Will treatment hurt?

Osteopathic treatment is generally gentle. Techniques are chosen and adapted based on your comfort, sensitivity, and preferences.

Some techniques may feel unfamiliar, and mild soreness after treatment can occur, similar to how you might feel after exercise. Your osteopath will always work within your comfort and explain what they are doing throughout the session.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing that allows movement is helpful, but assessment and treatment can be adapted to what you’re wearing. In some cases, you may be asked to remove outer layers so movement can be assessed more clearly. Your comfort and dignity are always respected. We always have shorts and t-shirts to change into on hand, so you don’t need to bring anything or worry if you forget.

How many sessions are usually needed?

This varies depending on the nature of your symptoms, how long they’ve been present, and how your body responds to treatment.

Some people notice improvement after one or two sessions. Others benefit from a short course of care to support longer‑term change. Rather than setting a fixed plan upfront, your osteopath will discuss expectations and options with you as treatment progresses.

Ongoing appointments are not automatically shorter than the first visit. Some people prefer shorter, more focused sessions, while others benefit from longer appointments that allow time for reassessment and treatment.

When osteopathy may not be appropriate

Osteopathy is well suited to many musculoskeletal and movement‑related concerns, but it is not appropriate for every condition.

If your symptoms suggest the need for imaging, medical review, or referral to another healthcare professional, this will be discussed with you and appropriate guidance provided.

Who you might see

Osteopathic Centre Hong Kong operates as a team‑based practice. This means you may be recommended to see the osteopath best suited to your needs, rather than being assigned to a single practitioner by default.

Our osteopaths work collaboratively, and your care remains within the wider OCHK team if ongoing support or continuity is needed

Can I Choose My Practitioner?

Yes. If you would like to book with a specific practitioner, you can do so online or contact reception and we will help arrange this where availability allows.

Insurance Receipts

We can provide receipts for patients who wish to submit claims to their insurance provider. Coverage varies depending on your individual policy, so we recommend checking directly with your insurer.
